A change of direction...
While organising my filming dates, several problems arose. It became very difficult to organise dates that all five of my actors would be available for. It also occured to me that five main characters, each with an individual story, would be extremely difficult to fit into a 90 second trailer. Therefore, I decided that I needed to take a new direction with my trailer.
The new idea
Instead of using all five characters, I have picked two- the Oxford hopeful and the college drop out.
George, the Oxford hopeful, does extremely well in school and is on track to achieve all A's in his A levels. However, he is shy and awkward and struggles to break into friendship groups and socialise.
Tom, the drop out, left school at 16 after achieving barely any GCSE's. Since then, a year and a half has passed and he has not done much else with his life. He is popular, gets the girls and his social life is bursting at the seams. However, he now wants to move on and achieve something worthwhile- re-sit his GCSE's and gain an apprentiship.
My documentary will follow the story of the unlikely pair as they attempt to help each other in the areas they are struggling with. I want to make my trailer touching and include humour, and my aim is to make my audience form a bond with the characters within 90 seconds, giving them the impression that the film is a definite must-watch.
Following the audience reception theory, my product will be interpreted in different ways by different audience members depending on their on cultural background and life experiences. For instance, people who face similar problems that my characters face will be able to identify and empathise with the characters.
Hopefully, by mixing the two characters together, I can bring hidden elements of their personality forward and present them to the audience in a way that encourages them to re think their preconcieved perceptions of the characters. I will aim to challenge stereotypes here.
