Final Trailer Idea

My Trailer- Rest of Your Life

My trailer will be for a film titled "Rest of Your Life". It will be a documentary following the lives of five people, aged 17 or 18. I want to present a unique insight for my audience, into the lives of people my age, and the pressures and struggles we face.

Why a documentary?
Although documentaries are known for presenting the truth, I enjoy the fact that this genre gives me plenty of freedom to use elements such as mise-en-scene and sound in a way that will draw a response from my audience. The genre presents a challenge in that everything I film must look realistic, so I must pay close attention to the small details of everything: props, costume, mise-en-scene, dialogue etc. I also picked the documentary genre because I watch a lot of documentaries myself and greatly enjoy them, so my passion for the genre will help me create something of a high standard. Plus, I know what documentary audiences want and can cater for this.

The characters

Emily - Emily is 17 years old, and is five months pregnant when we begin filming. The documentary will follow Emily as she struggles to make her family come to terms with her pregnancy. Her boyfriend will also face challenges as he prepares to be a father. He may become a major character.

Sam - Sam is 18 years old, and is the class clown. He is very popular amongst the other people in his year, has many friends and a booming social life. However,  although he is smart, he is not very focussed on his A Levels, and the prospect of university on the horizon does not seem to alter this. The documentary will show Sam's journey as he attempts to find his path in life.

Matthew - Matthew is 18 years old, and his parents have big plans for him. They have high hopes of him going to Oxford to study for a  degree in law. Matthew faces immense pressure to work hard and achieve high grades, which means that his social life has suffered greatly. The film will show Matthew's battles with his parents, as he attempts to keep seeing his friends, as they will all be off to different universities before long. There will be some battles between Matthew as his parents, and he may not end up going down the Oxford route...

Jennifer - Jennifer is 17 years old. She is an outcast. She does not have many friends, and often isolates herself from others with the use of a pair of earphones and a book. The idea of going to university and having to meet a whole lot of new people is a daunting prospect for her. She is an extremely talented artist, and often throws herself into the work, again isolating herself from the world. I think that she will become a very popular character.

Tom - Tom is 18. After attending college for only a few months, he fell in with the wrong crowd and dropped out. He now spends his days selling drugs, and is on the verge of being kicked out of his house. Despite this, Tom is an intellegent individual who cares greatly for his little sister, which may be his saving grace. Tom will be an extremely vibrant, interesting character to follow.

Representations

The great thing about having 5 major characters is that I have a lot of room to create representations of people from different social backgrounds. For instance, Tom will have a low position in society, which I will want to reflect through the use of costume and mise-en-scene, as well as the dialogue that he delivers. I have the chance to use stereotypes, by either conforming to them or challenging them.
